This presentation focuses on the implementation of today’s knowledge, industry standards and best practices for mass concrete with an overview of design to construction challenges and opportunities in projects from a field practitioners’ perspective. A special emphasis will be given to the updates provided for mass concrete requirements and guidance published in the CSA A23.1-2019.

Mass concrete (or thermally controlled concrete) commonly requires means and methods to reduce maximum temperature, mitigate temperature difference, among other project specific requirements. Temperature limits can affect mix design selection, reinforcement details, construction operations and even compliance to specifications for mass concrete related work. Many of today’s specifications typically limit temperatures to conservative default values usually referred in industry standards; however, it can be recognized that current standards for mass concrete often do not reflect the current state of knowledge on performance or experience from field practitioners. This frequently results in unfortunate challenging and difficult scenarios during design and construction of mass concrete placements.

Learning Objectives:

  • Know mass concrete requirements and guidance published in the CSA A23.1-2019
  • Learn technical rationale to specify practical and reasonable requirements for mass concrete
  • Optimize mass concrete mixture proportions to achieve the desired performance goals
  • Recognize design and specification challenges that affect construction and performance of mass concrete
  • Identify ways to implement different thermal control measures during mass concrete construction

Speaker:

Oscar R. Antommattei, MS, PE, FACI is the Chief Concrete Engineer and Engineering Manager that leads the Materials Engineering team at Kiewit. He has over 18 years industry experience with focus on concrete materials and construction, including supporting over 100 projects requiring thermal control for mass concrete in North America.  In 2019, he was recognized as one of the Most Influential People in the Concrete Industry.

Oscar serves in several committees in ACI, ASTM, CSA and ASCC. In ACI, he is a member of the ACI 301-H subcommittee on mass concrete and has been responsible for leading the most recent revisions of the ACI 207.1 Guide to Mass Concrete. He is currently the Chair of ACI 305 Hot Weather Committee, and the Chair of ACI 201-G Subcommittee for the Specification on Executing Durability in Concrete Construction. Oscar is also a member of the CSA A23.1/.2 technical committee, where he is the Chair of Clause 8 Subcommittee on Concrete with Special Performance and Material Requirements, and recently led the development of the requirements and guidance for mass concrete published in the CSA A23.1-2019.
